Touring Turkey / Urfa:
Such a pilgrimage site this is...
Urfa is the birthplace and home town of Abraham.
We do know the significance of Abraham in Jewish & Christian understandings. However, since you are visiting an Islamic country... most moderate Islamic country ever but still Islamic... lets look at how Islam sees Abraham:
He is mentioned in 25 different sections of Qur'an.
Abraham is accepted as the father of "One God" understanding... termed as "friend of God" and believed to be a prophet... he is known as a "hanif"; discoverer of monotheism.
The teaching is:
His firstborn son; Ishmael (Ismail) is considered as the "father of Arabs".
His second son; Isaac is considered as the "father of Hebrews".
The teaching continues by noting that the first 'House of God' was built in Kaaba by Abraham (in Mecca now, that Muslims used to visit for their annual Hajj service).
"Festival of Sacrifice" or "Greater Bairam" is a religious festival celebrated by Muslims worldwide to commemorate the willingness of Abraham (Ibrahim) to sacrifice his son Ishmael as an act of obedience to God. In return, God spares his son's life and instead substitutes a sheep.
This was Abraham's test of faith.
On Eid (festival) of Sacrifice, Muslims sacrify a herbivore animal - a sheep, goat, cow, buffalo or camel - as a symbol of Abraham's sacrifice, and divide the meat among the family members, friends, relatives, and most importantly, the poor.
After reading the words above,
if you happen to be in Urfa one of these day, would you be surprised to see
• hundreds of Islamic people visiting the cave of Abraham (believed to be the birth place of Abraham),
• hundreds of Islamic people visiting the legendary 'Pool of Sacred Fish' where Abraham was believed to be thrown into the fire... that if you ever happen to see a white fish, you will go to Heaven !!!
Well... I must say... I have been to Urfa many times and have not yet seen the white fish...
It looks like I still have some work to do !
